The new building's construction earned it a "green" designation from Portland General Electric for energy efficiency, as well as a spot in the "Ten Shades of Green" exhibit at the Ecotrust Northwest's Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center in Portland. The project beat out projects in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia to make the exhibit.

A building receives "green" status by being extraordinarily energy efficient while better cleaning indoor air, better utilizing natural light, and by using simple materials, non-toxic finishes, and sustainable materials curing construction.

Edward F. Stevens was the 10th president of the university. He died in 1988.
