"Our steadfast commitment to Michigan's environment is paying off," Engler says. "We are a national leader in such areas as brownfield redevelopment and ridding waterways of contaminated sediments."

Senate Bill 291 provides:* $35.7 million for the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated properties.

* $15 million to address leaking storage tanks.

* $4 million for the Municipal Landfill Grant program, which supports environmental response activities at certain municipal solid waste landfills.

* $3 million for the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, which encourages environmentally sound practices on agricultural lands to improve water quality and wildlife habitat.

* $2.4 million for the Abandoned Well Management Program, which assists communities in locating and plugging abandoned wells to avoid contaminating public water supply wells.
