"Money magazine recently described the pair as legends of the real estate fund world -- and rightfully so," says NAREIT President & CEO Steven A. Wechsler.
Cohen, president of Cohen & Steers Capital Management, leads a company that is "one of the foremost innovators" in the industry, says NAREIT 2001-02 Chairman William D. Sanders.
"In 1985, while a senior vice president at National Securities and Research Corporation, Marty Cohen organized and managed the nation's first real estate securities mutual fund with Robert Steers," Wechsler notes.
Winograd, CEO of Prudential Real Estate Investors, has been an advocate for REITs' inclusion in public portfolios, says Sanders, chairman of Security Capital Group, Inc.
"While with Taubman Centers, Inc., Bernard Winograd played a central role in engineering the first IPO of an UPREIT in 1992," Sanders says. "Many industry insiders consider the Taubman transaction the catalyst for the IPO surge that followed. Bernard was one of the principal decisionmakers responsible for NAREIT's initial white paper on funds from operations."
