"There's no chance we would move," Jeff Selberg, president of Exempla/HealthCare tells GlobeSt.com. "With our heritage starting with the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth dating back to the early 1870s, we are very committed to serving the surrounding region, we would never move."

In fact, he tells GlobeSt.com that he's recently kicked off a $190-million renovation of St. Joseph that is expected to take 10 years. "The first thing we're going to do is a full renovation of each nursing unit station," he discloses. "We're going to redo the units, slab to slab. It costs $5 million per each nursing station." Electrical work already has begun on two towers and all of the hospital rooms and common area space will be completely made over, he says.

Also, St. Joseph will consider taking over some of the space being vacated by Children's in the coming years. "We've had some very preliminary conversations with Children's Hospital," Selberg says. "They want to retain some services here, like pediatrician urgency care and some clinics. It might make sense for us to provide the infrastructure and they can own and manage those as a part of St. Joseph.
