The hospital sailed through a Fort Lauderdale Development Review Committee review this week, and is tentatively scheduled for a second round of site-plan review at the Dec. 12 meeting of the Fort Lauderdale Planning and Zoning Board.

If the site plan passes the P&Z board, the project would require only the approval of the Fort Lauderdale City Commission prior to pulling building permits. The medical center is an affiliate of the North Broward Hospital District, a non-profit community health system.

Except for minor modifications, a spokesman for the city's construction services division tells GlobeSt.com the site-plan appears to conform to all city ordinances. He did not anticipate any obstacles to the plan. It is uncertain how much of the space is earmarked for physicians' offices.

Although hospital officials did not respond to several requests from GlobeSt.com for comment, information published on the hospital's Internet Web Site (www.nbhd.org) shows that the plan focuses on several priority needs. Those needs include emergency, trauma, surgery and cardiovascular facilities; and the possible consolidation of some psychiatric, women and children's services.

The information published on the Web site shows the hospital has selected Hammes/Bovis, a joint venture of Hammes Co. and Bovis Construction Corp., as the project manager. Nashville, TN-based Earl Swensson Associates is the project architect.

The project management contract is building on the strength of Hammes, a Brookfield, WI-based health care real estate development and strategy firm, and Bovis, a subsidiary of London-based Bovis Lend Lease Corp. and one of the largest health care construction management firms in the country.
