Derry Factory Wins International Design Award

LONDON-A 250,000-sf computer factory in Northern Ireland has won an international award for innovation in construction techniques. Seagate Technology's plant in Derry, Northern Ireland, has won an award from the Design Build Institute of America.

The 250,000 sq ft facility at Springtown Industrial Estate Derry was designed to manufacture 200 mm diameter wafers for Seagate's range of hard disc drives. The highly specialised building needed a controlled environment and clean room and required access to large quantities of ultra clean water.

The award recognised the design quality of the project, and in addition it recognised the design team's use of innovative systems to improve cost, efficiency, speed, safety and quality.
