Williams Construction of Florida managed the facility's construction. Home Depot could not be reached by press time for comment. The facility was announced in May and finished last week. Doors officially open tomorrow.
According to published reports, Baytown cut a lucrative tax abatement package with the big box retailer in order to secure the southwestern distribution hub. The facility will serve the southwestern states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Home Depot has more than 20 stores in Houston and the surrounding area.
Atlanta-based Home Depot's CEO and president Bob Nardelli says the plan is to open about 200 new stores per year over the course of the next three years. Nardelli expects sales in fiscal year 2001 to reach $53 billion.
