Grading began yesterday on the property at Mission Gorge Road and Cuyamaca Street, where the Target-anchored center is scheduled to open in October. The project will include 440,000 sf of retail, and Vestar officials say they have commitments from Party City, T.J. Maxx, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Pier 1 Imports and Old Navy.
The center also includes a landscaped promenade, water fountains, and a 250-seat amphitheater.
Vestar is the latest of several developers to try and move forward on the project since the mid-1980s, when it was first proposed. After hoping for a theater-based entertainment haven, the city in August approved Vestar's proposal to have Target as the anchor.
