The RIA is a $1-billion project funded by the US Department of Energy and the NationalScience Foundation to achieve breakthrough discoveries in nuclear physics, biomedicine, materials research and national security.

This facility would have an annual operating budget of nearly $100 million and house 400 researchers and technicians.

"The RIA laboratory would profoundly change the university and cement its reputation as the world leader in high-energy physics," Engler says. "In fact, this could be the most important decision in the history of the university."

The facility would add to the state's already building commitment to science and technology facilities in the Ann Arbor-Detroit-Oakland County area.

"More than $2 billion of new buildings on our campuses, Automation Alley, Smart Parks, the Life Sciences Corridor -- all reflect the exciting transformation under way," Engler says.
