Owners are planning renovation of The Vallecitos Town Center in San Marcos at state Route 78 and Nordahl Road, which houses the now vacant Edwards 6 cinema. Meanwhile, at El Camino North on the north side of Route 78 at El Camino Real, owner Center Trust Inc. of Manhattan Beach plans to spend $15 million to revamp the center, including knocking down the long-vacantMann Theatres four-plex.

The 25,000-sf Mann building in Oceanside did attract some interested tenants but none that Center Trust felt would fit in well with other retailers at the 22-year-old, 450,000-sf-center, which includes Mervyn's, Petco, Toys R Us, Steinmart and Ross.

In North County, several theaters closed in the past two years. The Del Norte Plaza Movies 8 in Escondido has been converted into an LA Fitness, which is scheduled to open Friday.

The Vallecitos Town Center in San Marcos is more than half vacant. Both plans for the center call for demolishing the former Edwards building, as well as the vacant Home Base and Levitz furniture buildings.

In their place, mall operator World Premier Investments of Orange County proposes two buildings: One would be 140,700 sf, and the other, 46,000 sf.
