Kristin Hower, Summit's senior vice president, the $10.2-million price tag is a bit high for a Wal-Mart, but the 26-acre tract requires extensive site work that is driving up the development cost. Summit's contract encompasses all off and on-site construction for the project. Merriam, KS-based Arthur Boice Jr. is the project architect. The 219,622-sf superstore will include a grocery store, automotive department and garden center.
The contract comes on the heels of the completion of a 210,000-sf Supercenter that Summit built in Tucson at the Foothills Mall. Summit's Wal-Mart projects also have brought the Bentonville, AR-based retailer to Glendale, Flagstaff and Lake Havasu and Taos, NM.
Hower could not speculate as to how many more Wal-Mart contracts that Summit will land this year since each location is individually bid, little advance notice for builders. But, the plan is to bid and hopefully secure more contracts from the retail giant.
Summit is ranked in the Top 500 national companies by Inc. magazine and Top 400 companies by Engineering News-Record. Hower says some of the firm's other large clients include Lowe's home improvement, Fry's food stores, the Great Indoors, Scottsdale Health Care and Denali National Trust.
