Santa Barbara-based owner West Financial Corp. has hired Irvine-based R.D. Olson Construction, which specializes in hotels, retail stores and business complexes, to build additions to the San Diego Blue Sea Lodge.

Construction is scheduled for completion in summer 2003.

About 21,600 sf of the hotel overlooking the ocean at 707 Pacific Beach Drive undergo reconstruction. The work will include renovation of the lobby and the addition of two buildings, which will house 28 rooms. The parking garage will also be expanded by 4,000 sf.

SGPA Architecture and Planning designed the hotel's renovations and additions to improve its current Mediterranean architectural style.

The renovation is noteworthy because investors have been wary about purchasing new hotel properties or major renovations because of the soft economy and the impact of Sept. 11, which hurt the travel market nationally.
