The Big Kmarts being closed in Massachusetts are 227 Highland Ave. here, 367 Russell St. in Hadley and 80 Main St. in North Adams. Kmart terms these and the other 281 stores it is closing "under-performing" stores. The discount retail chain has 26 other stores in the state.
Kmart says it anticipates that the closing of these 284 stores "will significantly enhance the company's operational and financial performance" and will generate $550 million. The store closings need to be approved by the bankruptcy court.
