'There's a greater assertiveness for global trading in other markets than in real estate,' he said at the MIPIM property show in Cannes, France. 'There's too much ethno-centricity in North America. People are still focused too much on their own markets.'

Bennett admitted that the legal and accountancy models are different to real estate. 'By and large, they don't deal with tangible resources,' he said. 'Whether it's law or taxes or monetary systems, they're not made of concrete.'

But he added: 'I was shocked at the relatively few number of Americans at this show (MIPIM).'
