Meanwhile, 62% of Fremont Township voters in fast-growing central Lake County rejected a proposal to borrow up to $10 million to buy up property to preserve it as open space.

Chicago-based Loyola University, which paid $12 million for the Wilmette property in 1999 for its Mallinckrodt College campus, had a deal in place with Edward R. James Partners, which planned a residential project with some retail space at 1041 N. Ridge Rd. In Barrington, the Jewel Tea property on N. Lake Zurich Road at Northwest Highway was on the market for $12 million. While no development proposal is on the table, supporters in Barrington viewed the referendum as a last chance to preserve property bordering a marsh area.

In two advisory referenda, 80% of voters in eight precincts around Wrigley Field said the Cubs should address neighborhood problems such as traffic before proceeding with plans for expanding the ballpark's bleachers. Likewise, 74% of voters in three precincts said the Bears should not be allowed to sell naming rights for Soldier Field, now undergoing a two-year renovation.
