The height of the original tower has been reduced from 181 metres (588ft) to 120 metres (390 ft), and the council's Major Planning Applications Committee has agreed the new proposals in principle. The committee agreed that the cluster of buildings which rises in steps to 30 storeys and incorporates office, residential and retail use, was an innovative interpretation of the council's previous recommendations. Chelsfield has also been asked to reinstate the public viewing platform 'The Paddington Eye', and to increase the percentage of affordable housing in the scheme to 25%
Councillor Angela Hooper, Cabinet Member for City Development said: 'This example shows that Westminster can accommodate tall buildings within major new developments but only if they are representative of outstanding examples of innovative modern architecture.'
