The county's rate of unemployment declined 0.3% from January to February, according to a recently released study by the State of California Employment Development Department. The rate dipped from 3.9% in January 2002, when 61,200 people were unemployed, to 3.6% in February 2002, when 57,000 employees were out of work.

Orange County reported a labor force of 1,563,8000 people in February and counted 1,506,800 workers as employed. Its rank as number three in the state has remained unchanged from January, which means only two other regions in California have a lower unemployment rate than Orange County. In addition, the county has once again reported a lower level of unemployment than the statewide average. The state's overall unemployment rate is 6.4%, which is nearly three percentage points higher than Orange County's unemployment rate for February.
