The work includes replacing the stage, building a new orchestra pit, installing mechanical infrastructure, improving dressing rooms, building new wardrobe and laundry rooms in the basement.
Money for the work is coming from the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs.
"There is a tremendous amount of work to be done in a relatively short period of time," says Newcastle Limited president Michael R. Haney in a statement. "But we have the team in place that can do it."
W.E. O'Neil Construction Co. is the general contractor. Daniel P. Coffey & Associates is project architect.
The first phase involved renovating artwork, improvements to the lobby and new carpeting, Haney says, which was done on time and under budget last summer.
