Toyota of Escondido is in escrow to buy the 10-acre parcel for the project at the southeast corner of the intersection. Officials for the two-decade-old dealership say it would give Toyota of Escondido enough room to sell nearly twice as many vehicles than space allows across the street at its current location.
The dealership plans to sell used vehicles. The new location also would allow the dealership to double the size of its service center by building up to 60 service bays.
The city bought the current site in 1991 from Hyundai of Escondido. For the past three years, the city has tried to sell the property, primarily to retail users. The Planning Commission approved the development plan last week.
