A decision has been postponed until next week in order to allow officials to settle on the exact uses that will be allowed.
Proponents see the measure as a means for generating more revenue, as is the case for the Manette Elementary School building, which was vacated by the U.S. Navy three years ago. Detractors argue the ordinance change will destroy the character of various neighborhoods in which these semi-public facilities are housed.
If city officials don't approve the switch, the public buildings that become vacant likely will be demolished. The council already adopted such a policy regarding the recycling of such facilities, but next week's vote would make it official.
