A key part of the expansion doubles the size of the exhibit space to 600,000 sf from 300,000 sf, which officials say will create the single largest room west of Chicago's McCormick Place.

More than 800 people are expected to participate in the groundbreaking, breaking the current Guinness World Record for a groundbreaking.

That record was set on July 16, 1999, when 800 people participated in a groundbreaking ceremony at the Ace Hardware Retail Support Center in Loxley, AL.

Employees from every aspect of the travel industry are participating. Restaurant chefs are going to help break ground using soup spoons and ladles. Hotel bellmen and housekeeping staffs will be present in uniform. Mascots from cultural facilities will be there, as will characters in costume and entertainers.

Voters approved the bond issue for the convention center expansion in November 1999.
