Many people are concerned over the new plant's Bay-water cooling system, which will be that of the National Marine Fisheries Service, whose representatives say a letter earlier this month to the CEC suggested that Mirant Corp. should resubmit its plans using a less harmful, land-based approach.
Mirant spokesman Patrick Dorinson has countered that the complete facts will not be available until the CEC holds evidentiary hearings in May, at which point the company will be able to present testimony from its own experts to counter preliminary findings.
If approved by the state energy commission, also known as the CEC, the Mirant Corp. project would result in a 540-megawatt plant at 1201 Illinois St., where the existing Bayside facility currently generates 360-megawatts.
At the meeting, participants are expected to discuss the schedule for future hearings.
