Conoco has tapped Ponca City, producer of 50% of its US gasoline supply, to lead the initiative to develop a cleaner-burning fuel. A source at Conoco tells GlobeSt.com that 18-month project begins in July and delivers no later than Jan. 1, 2004. The upgrade primarily consists of outdoor equipment going up on the 1,000-acre campus that boasts two million sf of office buildings.
Conoco has about 2,000 employees on the campus, of which 700 are blue collar. The upgrade is not projected to alter the head count when construction wraps up.
"The Ponca City refinery upgrade is the first step in our long-term strategy for producing low-sulfur gasoline at all four of Conoco's US refineries," says Jim Nokes, executive vice president. He says the ultimate goal is to "optimize low-sulfur gasoline investments" while deliver a cleaner-burning, low-sulfur gas for consumers.
