Located on 95 acres 50 miles south of Fargo, ND, Imation's facility currently manufactures Imation 3.5-inch floppy diskettes and cartridges for data storage tape. The company is the only US-based manufacturer of CD-RW discs. Imation's Wahpeton plantemploys more than 700 people.
Comstock Construction, a general contractor based in Wahpeton, will be the general contractor on the project, beating out a number of Twin Cities firms. Construction is scheduled for completion in December 2002.
The $9.4-million project is funded in partnership with the Wahpeton Community Development Corp., a loan of up to $7.1 million, and a combination of grantsthrough the US Department of Commerce, the US Department of Agriculture, state department of commerce and local grants through the city of Wahpeton.
The existing Imation Wahpeton plant was recently dubbed by IndustryWeek magazine as one of the "14 Best Manufacturing Plants in North America and Europe.
