Hilton San Diego Convention Center LLC won the nod from the port commission from among four development groups proposing a deal to build a hotel at the former Campbell Industries shipyards.

Under the terms of the vote, port staff can negotiate with the Hilton group for up to three months on building terms and a 66-year lease. The port may negotiate with any of the three other groups that expressed interest in building the hotel if Hilton and the port can't reach an agreement.

The Hilton group is proposing that the port provide $26.5 million in improvements, including streets, sidewalks, a park and a plaza. In return, the Hilton group will pay the port and estimated $33.9 million in rent over the first 10 years. Hilton estimated the cost of the hotel at $292 million.

The three other contenders included Maritime Venture Partners, Marriott/Landmark Hotels, LLC, and Tishman Urban Development Corp./THR Management LP.

The hotel is considered vital to the success of the newly expanded San Diego Convention Center.
