The responses included letters of interest from Forest City, best known for developing the Emporium/Bloomingdale's site; John Stewart Co., which builds and manages housing; and Jim Lazarus, who represents the recently merged Museum of San Francisco and the San Francisco Historical Society. Lazarus is interested in the building's possibilities as a city museum.

Some of the ideas for the building are retail stores, commercial properties, housing, and recreation. The Old Mint, which was built more than a century ago, is a four-story, 77,000-sf building. It was one of the few buildings to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire. Seismic damages will cost an estimated $20 million to repair and the developer will pay this cost.
