According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board, the judge questioned why the township apparently approved plans for the Pokagon Band's Four Winds Casino before the state finished its environmental assessment for the property, and the US Army Corps of Engineers finished a report regarding potential environmental impact.
David Peterson, attorney for the township, told Judge James Robertson no environmental group had opposed the construction and that he has seen support for the casino from the surrounding community.
The gaming board says the new casino, if approved, will employ about 2,000 people and would be the second-largest Native American casino in Michigan.
