The goal of the latest grants is to help improve the look and feel of many of the smaller, older communities to ensure their future economic viability.

"Improving the amenities of central business districts will help attract businesses and families to Michigan's smaller urban cores," says Doug Rothwell, president and chief executive officer of the MEDC.

The program was temporarily expanded to include Downtown development projects. Each year, the state receives about $45 million in federal CDBG funds, and about 150 projects are funded throughout the state annually.
