The multi-use commercial complex is the centerpiece of what city officials call a renaissance under way in the Chula Vista's central business corridor. They say the redevelopment project will boost the South Bay economy by creating more than 1,000 new jobs and tens of thousands in tax revenue.
Mayor Shirley Horton, the project developer, Gateway Chula Vista LLC and other civic and business leaders will attend a June 7 open house at the new center.
At buildout, Gateway Chula Vista -- the city's largest redevelopment effort since Third Avenue's Park Plaza in 1984 -- will total 347,000 sf of office and retail development. The project broke ground a year ago. If all goes as planned, the complex of 62,000 sf of retail and about 285,000 sf of office space could be completed by 2005.
A year ago, the lead developer, Jim Pieri, announced five leases valued atmore than $5.5 million at the center, including San Diego County Credit Union, which signed a 20-year lease for 7,964 sf. Velure Investments signed a seven-year lease for 2,100 sf, Global Fax Network signed a seven-year lease for 1,500 sf, United Title Escrow signed a five-year lease for 1,605 sf and Chiyoda Integra of Tokyo signed a five-year lease for 1,139 sf.
