The $19 million apartment project on five acres will be an extension of the Vintage Pointe senior housing project, according to representatives for the City Council.
USA Properties Fund of Roseville owns Vintage Pointe. Officials for the group say the existing 136-unit complex has a two-year waiting period. The property is the remaining vacant land of what once was the Sterling Homes military housing complex.
A one-bedroom unit will rent for $451, while a two-bedroom apartment will cost $811. Residents over age 55 with incomes below the county average will be eligible for the units.
The city has tried for years to convert the military housing to commercial use. At one time, city officials approved a theater complex with shops and restaurants. But the project ran into financial difficulties and never got off the ground.
The project, likely to break ground in April, will use state tax credits, private financing and city funds.
