The News, the oldest ongoing business in Downtown Denver, eventually will move into a building with its competitor, the Denver Post.

The News and the Post are in a joint operating agreement, with all business aspects of the paper controlled by a third company, the Denver Newspaper Agency. The DNA wants to move the two papers into the same building for operating efficiencies and is looking to sell the News building.

However, DNA spokesman Jim Nolan emphasizes the News building is not under contract at this time. There's not even a handshake agreement, he adds.

Last November, voters turned down a $325-million proposal to build a 2,800-bed jail on a Sears site at West Sixth Avenue and Interstate 25, following protests from the nearby neighbors.

The jail, if built on the News site, would have roughly 1,000 beds and would be less expensive, Oliva says. A nearby jail in the Golden Triangle would be converted into a work-release facility.

Webb aide Andrew Hudson says the mayor hasn't had time yet to decide whether he will go with the News site, or whether he will seek another referendum on the issue in November.

However, he tells the city council he expects to have a plan for a new jail within two weeks.The current jail is overcrowded. There are currently 1,976 county inmates in a jail designed for 1,320. And there are 257 women locked up in a facility designed for 120 women.
