The new 270,000-sf facility replaces the crowded and outdated Shapero Hall, located on the Chrysler Freeway service drive north of East Lafayette Boulevard.

About $16 million was raised through a fundraising campaign for the new facility. The state of Michigan committed an additional $48 million to the project.

The new facility includes a 198-seat multimedia auditorium and a teleconferencing seminar room.

A new $12-million on-campus residence hall is also under construction, and is scheduled to be completed in August.

The college also plans on beginning a $350-million to $500-million capital campaign by 2004.

The campaign is part of the college's new strategic action plan, which includes ways to improve virtually every part of the college. The plan also includes improving a 75-acre research and technology park on campus, and spending money for new facilities.
