"The new Tampa Museum of Art will be a world-class facility that serves as the prelude to a new, vibrant downtown cultural district," Vinoly said at the event. "It will be more than a place where people visit during museum hours. It will be an urban center--a gathering place for families and a historical landmark for the city. We have given the city a more intimate connection to its waterfront with this design, while moving the museum away from the water's edge."
One of the most distinctive features of the steel and translucent structure will be a canopy, designed to address problems such as visual access in an area surrounded by other prominent edifices. Construction of the project is expected to begin next year and the estimated completion date is December 2004.
