"This brownfield redevelopment will convert several unused, deteriorating buildings into a vibrant downtown center," Gov. John Engler says.

The project includes 230,000 sf of residential space and 100,000 sf of retail space. Also included is a courtyard with outdoor amphitheater, outdoor dining and seating area and a gazebo.

The development earned a $2.8-million brownfield redevelopment grant from the state.

The developer is a company formed by Pioneer General Contractors Inc. and American Seating Co., which has operated in Grand Rapids since 1886. The seating company will have its new corporate headquarters in the redeveloped complex.
