The automotive headquarters will eventually accommodate up to 500 employees and is designed for additional expansion. The facility unites 240 associates from across the greater Detroit region including employees from Rochester Hills, Northville, Troy, Farmington Hills and Dearborn.

The new headquarters facility is a sign that the company is showing that automotive is a large part of the business, says Kim Hurley-Young, marketing specialist for Motorola.

"Automotive is the primary core of our business, and that business has its home in Detroit. We're reaffirming our commitment to this area," Hurley-Young tells GlobeSt.com.

"The creation of our automotive headquarters campus is the cornerstone of Motorola's commitment to being a leading supplier of next generation electronics and communications systems to the automotive industry," says Jacqui Dedo, vice president and general manager of worldwide market operations, Motorola Automotive. "Motorola's roots are automotive--we were founded 70 years ago as a supplier to the automotive industry, and our focus on this market has never been stronger."

The build-to-suit facility was developed by Bloomfield Hills-based Kojaian Cos., which built two other similar-size buildings in the Corporate Center, including a building for GDX Automotive. The 134-acre Corporate Center property was bought after Kojaian successfully bid on the property from Bank One, which had planned an administrative facility on the land, but dropped the parcel when it merged with National Bank of Detroit and AMRO.

The architect for the Motorola building was the design firm Minoru Yamasaki Associates. It took almost two years to build the facility.
