"We are looking to bring more retail business downtown to get a little more diversified," says the town representative. Currently the downtown area has some retail stores including hairdressers, a children's clothing store, restaurants and a real estate business. But a number of stores now stand vacant and the town wants to see book shops and galleries come in and possibly have a few nights a week where the stores stay open late. Lord's Department Store is also downtown and is one of only two establishments in the area that stay open till 9 pm.
The representative emphasizes that the town is not looking to bring additional residential developments to the downtown area, as is usually done to revitalize downtown areas. She says that the town already has two residential complexes on Main St.
The board of selectmen is in the process of forming the committee, which will be comprised of approximately five people.
