Granholm says she wants to be active in rebuilding, restoring and redefining Michigan's cities. Details of the plan include:
* Promoting economic empowerment in targeted redevelopment areas by establishing a Grow Michigan Fund to leverage private and existing public sources to provide low-interest loans to entrepreneurs and small businesses.
* Supporting sustainable growth and fight urban sprawl with a "Fix It First, Fix It Right" policy that will repair existing roads and sewers.
* Appointing a team of "blight busters" to tear down abandoned and dangerous buildings as well as dispose of vacant state-owned land.
* Eliminating red tape in the approval of "brownfields" development to restore polluted sites to productive and safe use.
"Our urban centers are integral to the economic well-being of our state," Granholm says. "Detroit is an integral part of our state, just like Chicago is integral to Illinois. Rejuvenating our urban centers is a benefit--not a bane--to our state."
Granholm says her administration would focus on tearing down dangerous, abandoned buildings, then turning over the property for redevelopment.
