Postal officials say the new facility is needed because of massive growth in the area.
"The new project will save taxpayers money," says Andy Farbman of the Farbman Group, the broker for the Postal Service. He adds the site selection is now down to three sites, including Auburn Hills and Pontiac, but would not disclose the location of the other site.
Many sites looked at for this project have not worked out, either because of land encumbrances, truck traffic needs or resident protest. In Shelby Township, residents vehemently opposed the plant going in at 23 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, at a former Ford test track location.
Farbman says the Postal Service is now negotiating with the owners of the three locations, and hope to have a decision made by fall.
