To date, SmartZones have spurred more than $100 million in private investment in the state, MEDC officials claim.

Each SmartZone business accelerator will help entrepreneurs and researchers identify technology with commercial potential, and help start businesses in the SmartZone areas.

The communities that earned SmartZone money are Grand Rapids ($300,000 with a $423,000 local match), Kalamazoo ($550,000 with a $2.46-million local match), Houghton ($500,000 with a $600,000 local match), Mount Pleasant ($250,000 with a $800,000 local match), Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti ($500,000 with a $1.29-million local match) and Woodward Avenue in Detroit ($400,000 with a $1-million local match).
