The facility will be funded by more than $130 million in private industry and venture capital support and technology investment led by Computer Associates, Symbol Technologies and Reuters. The latter firm will not be contributing financial assistance per se, but rather will offer the center its technological expertise, a Reuters spokesman tells GlobeSt.com. The state will provide $50 million in funding to support construction, and an estimated $50 million in federal support is anticipated over the next five years.

Located on the Stony Brook campus, the center will comprise an emerging wireless technologies lab, a cyber-security lab, a computer networking lab, a computational sciences lab, cleanrooms and workforce training rooms.

SUNY Stony Brook has also received $15 million in Strategically Targeted Academic Research funding from the New York State Office for Science, Technology and Academic Research to build a 67,000-sf facility focused on biomolecular diagnostics and therapeutics. The Center of Excellence and the Stony Brook STAR Center will be co-located to maximize cross-disciplinary interaction between IT and biotech researchers, whose work has become increasingly interdependent.
