There are a handful of YMCA gymnasium and recreation facilities in the Metropolitan Detroit area. However, the North Oakland County area has not had a dedicated facility since the Pontiac YMCA closed in 1985 due to a membership decline.
Recently, the Huron Valley Family YMCA was opened in Milford. The building is 48,000-sf, and has room for expansion.
The buildings are underwritten by with the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit's $70-million Building Strong Kids Capital Campaign.
The organization is raising $35 million through philanthropy and $35 million through tax-exempt bond sales over the next two years.
By 2005, the YMCA hopes to serve more than 500,000 children, adults and seniors in the region. The YMCA will be renovating or developing new buildings to the tune of an additional 443,000 sf.
