"This is a significant investment for H-E-B," Paul Madura, vice president and general manager of store operations said in a press release. Construction has just started at the store situated at 1345 Barrow.

The project comes just as the San Antonio-based grocery chain is ramping up openings at five former Albertsons stores. One published account says the San Antonio openings will begin Friday and roll out on a staggered basis for the balance of this month.

H-E-B stepped in to buy the sites after Albertsons announced plans to exit San Antonio and Houston. but making plans to infuse $100 million into the Austin market and $184 million into Dallas-Fort Worth. Just last week, Albertsons announced a similar $100-million campaign for Oklahoma. Albertsons seemingly has tossed down the gauntlet in the other territories as it expands, remodels and builds--just not in San Antonio or Houston where H-E-B is a mainstay and obvious favorite. Established in 1905 in the Central Texas town of Kerrville, H-E-B has 300 stores in Texas, Louisiana and Mexico.
