Overall, the application covers 1.67 million sf of development and includes a four-level department store at the eastern end of the development, which is believed to be earmarked for Selfridges plus another 15 major stores and 108 new smaller shops.

The design, by Chapman Taylor, includes new quarter centred around listed Quakers Friars; three new pedestrianised streets and a central civic square. In addition to the retail space the scheme will include Offices, leisure facilities and approximately 260 city centre apartments plus 2,650 new car parking spaces.

Land Securities Development Director Bob De Barr said: "Our plans aim to create a new retail-led city centre destination to rival Leeds, Newcastle and Glasgow. We believe that Bristol could become one of the top five retail destinations in the UK and that the Alliance's plans for Broadmead will attract interest from a wide range of national and international retailers."

Subject to planning consent, work could begin as early as 2004 with completion in Autumn 2007.
