Seventeen stores have already closed. The remaining nine will close by January, say officials of the Troy, MI-based company.
Officials say CD and other music sales at local big box chains, plus the Internet, contributed to the stores' demise. The first store was opened by Carl Thom, who died in 1994. His family has continued to run the company, existing as a chain that still offered an independent, small-time feel at each of its stores.
