UCAR manages NCAR under primary sponsorship from the National Science Foundation. Gibbons White Inc. of Boulder acted as broker.

The site purchased was the former headquarters of the corporate training firm CareerTrack and then the Internet company netLibrary. It is to the west of Foothills Parkway just south of UCAR's Foothills Laboratory.

The buildings include about 100,000 sf of space. The city of Boulder has granted preliminary permission for the construction of a 20,000-sf addition.

Starting this fall, Center Green will provide temporary quarters for staff during a $12-million refurbishment of NCAR's Mesa Laboratory, the signature building designed by architect I.M. Pei in south Boulder. UCAR administrative staff now housed in rental space will also move to Center Green.

"This gives us the opportunity not only to relieve the fairly intense overcrowding in our current facilities but also to build for the future," says Kathryn Schmoll, UCAR vice president for finance and administration.

With 400 seats in its auditorium, Center Green more than doubles UCAR's capacity to convene large meetings in one place. The plans for constructing additional space may include breakout rooms to further increase conference capacity. Large collaborative projects have become the hallmark of atmospheric science, Schmoll notes, and planning is now under way "to provide the kinds of meeting spaces that today's science requires."
