"ITT has stepped to the plate to agree to a clean up," Johnson says. "They've been working with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for a couple ofyears now."

In many cases of contaminated properties in Michigan, the owners hold onto a site until clear ownership is no longer easy to identify. Cleanup is then almost impossible without some governmental agency or new developer footing the bill.

Johnson says URS Corp. of Milwaukee is almost finished cleaning the site. He says no development is yet planned for the property, though new owner Western Knitting Mills is taking over the site.

Land is scarce in popular Rochester, and Johnson says a new development is expected to be brought to the city council soon.
