The average room rate was $87.15, actually higher than the $86.75 a year earlier.

Year to date, the average occupancy rate is 63.1%, compared with 67.6% in the first eight months of 2001.

But the strong August doesn't mean the worst is over, says Eugene Dilbeck, president and CEO of the Denver Convention & Visitor's Bureau.

Rather, it reflects three strong conventions in Denver and the Grand Prix at the end of the month, he says.

Hotel consultant Bob Benton, who authored the Rocky Mountain Lodging Report, says the commercial traffic still hasn't picked up, while tourism was awful this summer because of the wildfires and drought.

"The fourth quarter will show some improvement over last year's fourth quarter, only because the last few months of 2001 were so terrible because of Sept. 11," Benton tells GlobeSt.com.
