The site, which has been assembled by Pathfinder Properties, has 120 yards of frontage onto Trongate borders onto Candleriggs, Wilson Street and Hutcheson Street. Selfridges is currently developing a master plan for a mixed-use development but ultimately it will only retain ownership of the retail area.

Chief Executive Vittorio Radice said: "We are delighted to be playing a major role in the regeneration of Trongate and the Merchant City. This site, with a frontage onto Trongate which is almost as long as our Oxford Street store, will enable us to construct a new and exciting landmark building alongside Glasgow's existing architectural heritage."

The Glasow store will be Selfridges' fifth UK branch. The third--in Manchester City Centre--opened in September 2002 and a fourth--in Birmingham's Bull Ring development--will open in Autumn 2003. Selfridges believes that there is the potential for up to ten of its stores in the UK. The next target locations are in Bristol, Leeds and Newcastle.
