Art Van Furniture of Warren bought the luxury furniture chain in 1990. Now the company wants to exit the high-priced furniture market, which has been slow during the current economic downturn, and concentrate more on its own 28 stores. Two other stores in Grosse Pointe Park and Bloomfield Hills closed a few years ago. The closure of these three does not represent a bankruptcy of any kind, just the end of the line for the Shuptrine name as a retail entity.
Store officers wrote messages to customers on their Web site, thanking them for the business. "Though we are saying goodbye, we still pride ourselves on the exceptional customer service that has built this family-owned company," it says on the Web site. The stores will close for good after all of their inventory has been sold.
