According to published reports, Continental has been pursuing Kaufmann's, a Pittsburgh-based division of St. Louis, MO-based May Department Stores Co., for months. In the midst of negotiations, Kaufmann's headquarters moved to Boston, where it was folded into May's Filene's division.
More than two dozen retail and restaurant companies have already inked leases at The Waterfront's 400,000-sf "town center" retail sector. Many of them are already in operation. Loews Waterfront Theatre, for instance, is up and operating as the entertainment anchor.
Additional tenants include Ann Taylor Loft, American Eagle Outfitters, Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath & Beyond, Giant Eagle, Pier One, OfficeMax, McDonald's, and Baby Gap/Gap Kids among others. The elusive department store anchor remained a missing link.
Continental's joint-venture partner in The Waterfront is Columbus, OH-based Nationwide Realty Investors.
